This is a bit embarrassing, but there are a few points I wanted to touch on in this video that I completely forgot about during recording and editing.

1. Why did I have to modify the textures?
The only archived copy of this version of the game comes from the official Minecraft Launcher. For one reason or another, this restored version incorrectly uses a terrain.png from a future version. Most significantly, that version of the image has a newer texture for Planks and Saplings. While this version did change the Planks texture, it is changed again prior to the version this jar file incorrectly pulls from. Thanks to Minecraft Wiki, however, we do have public access to the original terrain.png used in this version. So, I downloaded it, did some minor tweaks in the interest of restoration, and replaced the terrain.png with the correct one.

I felt the need to do this for two reasons: 1, the original Sapling texture was actually an interesting bit of trivia and I felt it was historically significant to highlight how it looked since Notch specifically noted he thought it looked ugly and that drove him to “hide” the block on the 6 key instead of 5. And 2, if I didn’t restore this terrain.png, these textures for Planks and Saplings would go completely uncovered and I felt that wouldn’t be proper for the series. Note: I do not intend to continue updating this terrain.png since these textures have already been showcased. You may notice different textures in future videos before they’d officially be changed. I’ll make note of when the change is official.

2. What was that about the launcher version of rd-20090515?
This is the video where I was supposed to cover it in more detail. Likely due to an oversight, while the official launcher indeed *lists* rd-20090515, it actually just uses the jar file for this version, rd-161348. This is especially bizarre because it would imply to an ignorant player that the saplings were implemented, removed, and then implemented again in a later version.

3. Something seems different…
This was another detail I wanted to note in the video, but this is the first video I’ve recorded using a custom launcher: Betacraft! This launcher is designed with the express purpose of archiving as many versions of Minecraft as possible, including versions that are not archived in the official launcher. It also corrects some mistakes and serves as a proxy to correct some errors in audio and visuals in future versions. I actually wanted to use Betacraft from the start, but for some reason the very early pre-classic builds are extremely laggy when I run them through Betacraft. This one and onward though seem to work fine. If I do end up having issues with future versions, though, I’ll certainly switch back to the official launcher.

This video took a bit longer to produce than normal. As mentioned in the video, I have a new puppy in the house that I’m trying to take care of! Maybe he’ll make appearances in the background of future videos. But for the time being, house training this new dog is going to take a lot of my attention away from recording. Thankfully, this is happening right on the cusp of a transitional period for Minecraft development, so it gives me some time to think about how I want to handle the next leg of the series!

Anyway, in this video we cover the last available pre-classic version of Minecraft! This version adjusts world generation so that cliffs are more common and adds Saplings! These Saplings will now grow into trees yet, and they won’t for quite a while. They’re just for decoration! Very ugly decoration. So ugly, in fact, Notch felt the need to hide them!
